U.S. and Japan Announce $10B Tactical Aircraft Modernization Plan

Upgrades across multiple military bases to strengthen regional deterrence and enhance Indo-Pacific stability

The Department of Defense (DoD), in coordination with the Government of Japan, announced a plan to modernize U.S. tactical aircraft across several military bases in Japan. This upgrade, which is set to unfold over the next few years, involves over $10 billion in investments intended to enhance the U.S.-Japan Alliance, boost regional deterrence, and promote stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

The U.S. Air Force will begin by replacing 48 F-15C/D aircraft with 36 F-15EX aircraft at Kadena Air Base as part of a broader divestment and modernization strategy. During this transition, the Joint Force will maintain a rotational presence of 4th and 5th-generation tactical aircraft at Kadena. Additionally, the U.S. Air Force will upgrade its presence at Misawa Air Base, increasing its fleet from 36 F-16 aircraft to 48 F-35A aircraft, significantly enhancing tactical capacity and capability.

At Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni, the U.S. Marine Corps will modify the number of F-35B aircraft to support the Service’s force design modernization efforts. An enduring and rotational aircraft presence will be maintained at MCAS Iwakuni to ensure the U.S. Marine Corps has the necessary capabilities to support Japan’s defense.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For continued peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • For the safety and protection of all military personnel involved in the transition and upgrades.
  • For the strengthening of the U.S.-Japan Alliance and mutual efforts to lead to a more secure and cooperative relationship.
